When cash is needed quickly, most Indians land on one of two doors: the personal loan or the gold loan. Both can put money in your account within a day, but they work on very different principles, and picking the wrong one can cost you more than just interest.

How Each One Actually Works

A personal loan is unsecured. The lender assesses your income, credit score and repayment history, then lends a fixed amount for a fixed tenure. There is no collateral involved, so approval depends almost entirely on how much the lender trusts your ability to repay.

A gold loan is secured against your gold jewellery or coins. The lender values the gold, typically lends a percentage of that value, and holds the gold as collateral until you repay. Your income and credit score matter far less here, because the lender always has the gold to fall back on.

Speed and Paperwork

Gold loans are usually faster to disburse, since the collateral itself is the main underwriting decision. Digital personal loans have closed much of this gap, though. Many lenders now approve and disburse within minutes to a few hours once your KYC and bank statements are verified, especially for smaller ticket sizes.

Interest Rates: The Real Comparison

Gold loans typically carry lower interest rates than unsecured personal loans, because the lender's risk is limited by the collateral. Personal loan rates vary far more widely. A strong credit score and stable income can get you a rate close to a gold loan's, while a thin credit file or first-time borrower profile usually means a higher rate to compensate for the lender's risk.

The rate on paper is not the whole story. Always check the APR, which includes processing fees, rather than just the headline interest rate, and read the loan's Key Fact Statement before signing. Every RBI-regulated lender is required to give you one.

What You Are Actually Risking

This is where the two products genuinely diverge. Default on a personal loan and you damage your credit score and face collection processes. Default on a gold loan and the lender can auction your gold outright, often with limited notice once the loan tenure lapses. If those coins or that jewellery carry sentimental value, that risk is worth weighing carefully against the interest you might save.

Before You Decide, Check These

  • Compare the APR, not just the marketed rate, across at least two or three lenders.
  • Check pre-payment and foreclosure charges on both options.
  • Understand exactly what happens if you miss an EMI, or if a gold loan's tenure lapses.
  • Confirm the lender is RBI-registered, as a bank or NBFC, before sharing any documents.

Which One Should You Choose?

A gold loan tends to make sense when you have gold sitting idle, need a smaller amount for a short period, and are confident about repaying on schedule. A personal loan tends to make sense when you would rather not risk a family asset, need a larger amount or longer tenure, or simply do not have gold to pledge in the first place.

Quick Recap

  • Gold loans are secured against your gold and usually carry lower interest, but put a real asset at risk.
  • Personal loans are unsecured; the rate depends heavily on your credit score and income profile.
  • Compare APR, not just the headline rate, and always read the Key Fact Statement.
  • Choose based on what you are willing to risk, not just which rate looks lower.
